What is it that we anticipate to be known?

Why?

To be in a better position to differentiate between progress and decline over the course of human history, with special reference to discerning the actions of the Spirit in our own time.

My primary interest lies in Lonergan's functional specialty of Foundations, which sets the initial horizon and intentions that unfold over the subsequent specialties of Doctrines, Systematics, and Communications. Foundations rely on the output of Dialectics. As such, it involve acts of discernment involving choices between deep often opposing positions. In our own Western civilization, the primary conflict is that between secular and religious horizons, where religious ones are grounded in Judaism and Christianity, and secular ones in Marxist-bound critical theory and Leftest utopian visions. 


This blocking out of an evaluative history is only the initial starting point that belongs to the cognitive level of understanding. The next highest level, judging, comes later. While there are many histories that narrate stories of what was going forward, evaluative ones require a commitment to value. They require an answer to the question: What is worth fighting for?
